Episode 2:
AniMat's Top 10 Lists: Top 10 Best Animated Sequels
Not all animated sequels suck and are direct-to-video. AniMat has even compiled a top 10 list to prove it (it wasn’t easy finding those good sequels, by the way)!

Comment: animat, why is that pokemon in here? what about the only pokemon sequel ever: mewtwo returns. that was good and even went into more depth of mewtwo himself. not to mention the first time ash and gang meet Giovanni until pokemon best wishes came out, and even then it hasn't aired yet.

Comment: 10. This was a really good Pokemon movie! And it has reached the status of the first one in that it could make me cry when I first saw them. And it was epic!
9. I really like this one! It introduced me to Fantasia and was very clever with all the different animation styles. That, and two of my favorite segments came from there with the Carnival of the Animals and Rhapsody in Blue being my top 2 for comedic ones. And while the many celebrity cameos seemed a bit much, they're still really funny!
8. Never saw it but it seems good!
7. I really liked this one along with the Return of Jafar and would watch them on repeat along with the original on repeat all the time as a kid. They were just that great!
6. I thought Lion King 1 1/2 wouldn't count since it's technically a prequel and midquel mixed together from a different point of view? But I agree that the Lion King 2: Simba's Pride is a very worthy sequel to the Lion King.
5. Again, this was a really good sequel and had some the coolest imagery in a movie that not only made me want to see a theme park like that and have my own robot dinosaur to control. That, and it had a lot of heart in it with the plot of finding a mother for Chuckie. I'm glad they bring it up here since in the show it was only mentioned in the Mother's Day episode that she had died.
4. I LOVE THIS ONE! It was even more funny than the original, which was already hilarious. AND it gave us the cutest and most awesome character of all time! Puss in Boots!
3. Yet another film I watched on repeat in my childhood. It was that great! Those flying sequences were amazing that made me want to fly in the sky.
2. This looked SO GOOD! Why didn't I see it in theaters?!
1. Why why why why why WHY did I miss my chance to watch this in theaters and in 3-D?! It's trailers were powerful enough to make me cry!

Comment: Skipped over the Dreamworks/Pixar stuff. While there were some good picks in there, it was mostly disappointing. Get rid of Shrek 2, Kung Fu Panda and put Toy Story 3 somewhere on the lower end of the list, add Bambi 2 and An American Tail: Fievel Goes West and you've got a great list.

Comment: YESSS YEAH! I knew toy story 3 would be on top of the list. Pixar really did well on this one, I knew I would like it before i saw it and I give praise to pixar for making toy story 3 and praise to you Animat for putting that on top of the list. Toy story 3 is one of my favourite movies along with Megamind

Comment: @Andrew I respectfully disagree. "The Brave Little Toaster" is MUCH darker. It's the type of film that is filled with so many sad moments and scary scenes that it makes one feel so depressed (or at least I was). Don't get me wrong, "Toy Story 3" has it's dark and intense moments as well. But remember that "The Brave Little Toaster" was a movie made during a time when animation was at it's darkest. And even after so many years I still get creeped out whenever I watch it!

Comment: Here are my thoughts on the list:
10. Never saw it.
9. This was a very enjoyable film. Nowhere near as good as the original, but it's still great, (I strongly agree with you about the endless line of celebrities though).
8. Never saw it.
7. Not as good as the first, but WAY better than Return of Jafar.
6. I'll be honest, I didn't want to watch this at first because I thought it would insult the original. But after seeing this list, I'm actually being compelled to watch it. The same can be said for The Lion King 1 1/2.
5. Didn't see it. Never been a fan of Rugrats.
4. I don't know about you, but I think this is a major improvement from the first film. Not that the first film was bad, but most of the jokes fell flat and the whole romance felt slightly contrived and cliched. It felt more believable in the sequel.
3. I agree. Why couldn't the first film have been this epic?
2. I will admit that I was expecting this film to be mediocre, especially after seeing their previous attempts at continuing a franchise (case and point, Shrek 3 & 4). But I was surprised at how good it turned out to be.
1. I predicted this would be number one from the start. This movie makes the Toy Story worthy enough to join the other classic trilogies like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. A perfect choice for number one.

Comment: 10: Meh...Pokemon is just not my thing. 9: Yeah, this was very good but I disagree with the Carnival of the Animals segment. To me, the Fantasia series needed a purely fun entry amongst all the drama. 8: Still need to see the first Ghost in the Shell. 7: Thought nothing of it. 6: Yeah it's a pretty good sequel and I kind of agree with Zira being a bit cooler and more interesting than Scar. 5: Seems pretty good. I kind of outgrew Rugrats and Wild Thornberrys but this one is probably good. 4: Yeah, a great addition to the Shrek franchise. Wish I could say the same for the following two. 3: Yeah, really good and FAR more compelling, action packed and funnier than the first one. 2: Haven't seen it yet but looks REALLY good considering I loved the first Kung Fu Panda. 1: Absolutely nothing more I can say that hasn't already!

Comment: WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Toy Story 3.......................................... You know, I actually saw the commentary for TS3. According to the commentariers, the term for when the claw saves the gang is a storytelling term called "The Hand of Mitus" when the characters are put in the most extreme situation and are meraccualissly saved by an unexpected source. They even acknowledged it by calling the claw "The Hand". That storytelling trait is said to be a bad storytelling element and is not reccomended. My opinion: I can see how it would be an unreccomended and lazy storytelling element, but if used correctly and with the correct characters, e.g. Toy Story 3, it can build up a lot of drama and be very exciting.

Comment: 10. I NEVER was a Pokemon fan. Tried and tried, but...no. If you recommend this to a non-fan, though, I'll bite. 9. Good show, especially the "Rhapsody in Blue" segment. 8. Fantastic animation, just a fun movie. I wasn't crazy over these like some anime fans. 7. A film completely saved by the returning presence of Robin Williams. 6. No complaints here. 5. Sorry Mat. I could care less about these movies or the TV show that spawned them. Same goes for "The Wild Thornberries." 4. This movie, for me, was a rare case of being better than the first. Puss in Boots forever! 3. Great movie and an exciting sequel. It's one of the few Disney sequels to be worthy of the Disney Animated film canon. 2. I wouldn't know. I still have to see this. 1. This was the story I'd been waiting for.

Comment: Including the 8th Pokémon movie and calling it the best so far is unfair. Unfair, because you seen the dubs only. In original Wapanese, unedited, all of the sequels are awesome (especially the 3rd). And Toy Story 3... TOTALLY NOT MY LITTLE TOASTER! :D

Comment: I'll have to check out the Ghost in the Shell sequel it looks great, the rest you mentioned are worthy sequels to the franchises, I agree that Rescuers Down Under is much better than the original in storytelling, animation, characters, and action the original is not bad but it can be boring at times.

Comment: To AniMat: I know you might disagree AniMat but what about Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night as an honourable mention it's to me underrated. As for your Don Bluth lookback for you honourable mention you should talk about the point and click game he worked on; Dragon's Lair. Just thought I'd make a suggestion!

Comment: 10. Never watched this one since I'm not a pokemon fan - I'm also not sure if this counts. They are basically all movies to the TV-Show, not sequels to each other. I wouldn't put a Detective Conan movie on such a list either (although they are all good, I'm just itching to see number 15), for the same reason. 9. Love this! Although I have to disagree about your point concerning the humor, the original Fantasia (which I agree is still the better movie) has lots of it, especially in the segment with the hippos and the crocodiles. I don't think that the more humorous aspect ruins the feel of Pomp and Circumstances. I would agree if all the segments were this way, but like in Fantasia, Fantasia 2000 tried to show how different animation can interpret music. But those guest stars - horrible! I always felt that they were just there to stretch the movie. I would have prefered an additional segment instead. 8. Never saw...looks interesting. 7. Yeah, I agree...the second movie is horrible, but the third one was surprisingly good. Good story, nice message, and the songs are surprisingly catchy. It's not as great as the real disney masterpieces, but it's fun to watch. 6. I'm not too crazy about the story (although, yes, it might be approciate to use a Romeo and Juliet scenario as a sequel to a movie based on Hamlet, but the story isn't even really close to Romeo and Juliet), but yeah, the songs are decent, the animation is decent, you can life with it. 5. Again, wouldn't count it because it looks more a movie to a TV-Show thing than a real sequel (haven't seen it). 4. I agree - I'm not a fan of the whole Shrek franchise, but part 2 was a worthy sequel. I think, I like it even better than part 2, because unlike part 1 which pretent to reinvent the fairy tale story (but really doesn't), Shrek 2 actually does at least partly. 3. I was waiting for that one - way underrated sequel. I liked both movies equally, for different reasons. The Rescuers has the better villain (sorry, but everybody remembers the scene in which Medusa tells Penny that nobody will ever want her - McLeach is simply brutal) and a more conclusive (and heartwarming)stories, plus it's more about Bernard and Bianca (plus, I like the music, especially the Rescue aid society scene). The Rescuers Down Under has too many side plots crammed and doesn't really tie up all the lose ends at the end of the movie, but it has more action overall (although the scene with Penny in the cave had me more on the edge of the seat than anything what was done to Cody). Well, and the better animation, but that's a given considering the time it was made (so kind of an unfair comparism you did there). I think at the end of the day it depends on what you like more - if you are more inclined to musical numbers, settled humor and a little bit of pathos, you will prefer the first one, if you like Indiana Jones like action and great visuals, you will prefer the second one. 2. Never seen either movies (not a Kung Fu Fan, or Fans of Spoofs in general) 1. Saw this one coming, although I haven't seen it yet. But an animated sequel which actually gets an oscar nomination - that was a no brainer. Great list overall - you really managed to pick the few diamonds in the rough. I might have replaced the TV-Show Movies with real Sequels (and if you take them Detective Conan is a given), but otherwise...

And while I won't say Zira was a BETTER villain than Scar, she is awesome and my personal favorite Disney sequel villain (plus her song "My Lullaby" is totally on my top 10 Disney villain songs list!) 5. I liked this when I was younger. Now, it's just silly. And no, the Disney animatronics are 100 times better than the Euroreptarland trash. I almost wet myself watching the dragon-Maleficent one! 4. May be my favorite movie in the series. And I just MELTED seeing Puss' face. 3. HELL YEAH, BABY!!!! 2. Didn't like it as much as the first one, but still very enjoyable. 1. Saw this one coming a mile away! And yeah, I DID cry at the end! Great list, AniMat!

Comment: #10: Never saw it. #9: That movie was so AWESOME, almost as much as the original! #8: Never saw that one either. #7: I agree. My favorite song from that film is "Welcome to the Forty Theives". It's so darn catchy! #6: Honestly, considering the first Lion King is my favorite film of all time, the sequel was good, but not at the first one's level. I thought "Lion King 1 1/2" was the superior choice. But hey, it's your list. #5: That movie was hilarious. #4: Puss in Boots kicks butt! #3: WOAH. That's all I can say about that one. #2: YES!!! Best DreamWorks sequel EVER! #1: YEEEES!!!! BEST PIXAR SEQUEL EVAH!!!!! BTW, it's true. I cried at the incinerator scene of "Toy Story 3" but that was because it would be a horrible way to go for those beloved characters. That was a bold move though and showed that animation can be taken seriously with the right amount of effort put in. PIXAR rules!
