Comment: No offense Hewy, but I don't really see what's so great about this film. Many of the songs are fine (No More Mr. Nice Guy being my personal favorite), the animation is really good, and the voice acting is perfect. I'll also say that this is Richard Rich's best film ever (though considering the other films he's done that's not really saying much). But I just don't see what propels it to being one of the greatest animated movies ever. There are many plot holes, not all the songs are great (I honestly hate that "No Fear" song), and I just find Derek to be a poorly written character. In almost every scene, he's either just showing off what a superman he is or acting like a complete idiot. And in general, it just feels uninspired. It's obviously just one of those Disney knock-offs (a really good Disney knock-off, but nevertheless a Disney knock-off) I do highly respect your opinion, but I'd give it an overall rating of three-and-a-half out of five stars.
P.S. Could you possibly give your opinions on the sequels?

Comment: I really have to object to the notion that the sequence where Derek and Brom practice their bow-and-arrow skills with the musicians. Unlike other animated films where we're just expected to believe that the heroes have these awesome skills, The Swan Princess at least took a moment to show us what skills our hero has honing.
Other than that, great review.

Comment: I wouldn't say "Rock-A-Doodle", "A Troll In Central Park", "The Pagemaster", "FernGully", "Balto", or "We're Back!" are Disney knock-offs. None of them, outside of, I guess, "FernGully", conform to the tropes of the Disney films of the time. They were, without a doubt, made to compete with Disney, but that doesn't make them 'knock-offs'.

Comment: @ Ebalance: Not only has Hewy reviewed The Last Unicorn, he has also counted down his top 10 Rankin/Bass characters.

Comment: Could you do a show on Rankin Bass? They did a LOT more than just those stop motion Christmas shows, though I guess they're most famous for bringing us the "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" we all know and love... they also did some interesting fantasy stuff... can't remember if you took a look at "The Last Unicorn"... The Nostalgia Chick from TGWTG.com reviewed it... anyway, I'd love to see a deeper look into the works of Rankin Bass! :)
I still really like "The Black Cauldron"... somebody should do a live action mini-series or movie based on the Prydain stories!!!
I really think putting them together as kids like that would make them more brother-sister love than romance... bad idea? Then again, I guess marrying your cousin/sibling was the thing to do in royal circles... odd... like the song though... probably my favorite part of the movie... still feels sort of too "Disney-esque" for me, though...
That love song... okay... but WAY ripping off Disney... maybe that's why they put it not near the end... and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" is my fav... in my mind "The Lion King" is what I call a "perfect" movie, which means that I can't think of anything about it I would change to make it better...
OH!!! KILLER SMACKDOWN THERE!!! That was HILARIOUS!!! I would watch THAT movie!!! XD!!!!!
That princess song really reminds me of "Beautiful Girls" from the movie "Singing in the Rain"... probably I'm the only person who remembers that song...
So Derek marries a zombie?!
Well... must say "The Lion King" is probably my favorite movie, so I can't say "The Swan Princess" got as shafted as some other animated films... like... "The Black Cauldron" for example... so I'll say I do like "The Swan Princess," but doesn't hold a candle to a Shakespeare/Disney mash-up with an score by Hans Zimmer, and original songs by Elton John... it's freaking hard to compete with that...
Your dubbs are hilarious!!!
Love Sandy Duncan... didn't recognize her voice her... Vixy is one of my fav Disney "females"
The guy who does Derek REALLY looks like Derek...
I'd also like to see you review "The Lion King" as it is my favorite animated film, and at this point probably my favorite film overall...

Comment: If you think the animated remake of Rogers and Hammerstein's The King & I was awful, The Trumpet and the Swan was 100x worse and considered Richard Rich's worst and Rich Animation Studios' last picture before closing down after a string of finacial flops.

Comment: Bad movie but, great review. Yeah I didn't like the movie, to me its nothing but a rip off of Disney. The movie just didn't really come above any of the other rip offs, the only movie that did was Anastasia. The Swan Princess was not Richard Rich's best movie but, Yeah same people like this movie so it must have done something right, I didn't like but, that's just me Great Video.

Comment: Thank you Hewy for reviewing this amazing and delightful film. I loved every minute of this film and I am glad to hear that there is a cult of individuals who enjoy the superbe quality of this film. It is a great film that children should watch today. It is disappointing that film companies don't take pride in their works anymore. In the 1990's it was nice to see companies like Disney and even Richard Rich's animation studio actually care about their works. Thank you again Hewy for reviewing this film and giving a dedication to Michelle Nicastro. I did not know that she died. She was an amazing actress and portrayed Odette perfectly in all three of the Swan Princess films. Merci mille fois, Hewy. Je continuerai vous regarder tout le temps. A tout a l'heure!

Comment: I like this movie. I thought it was cute and the animation is beautiful. I also saw the sequels that were kinda cool. I just don't like the way they reuse the same animation in every movie. Still good movies. Hey just thought of something. Can you do a review on the swan princess sequels and/or a top 20 animated love songs list? Awesome!
