Episode 14:
Radical Reviewer:
The Pebble and the Penguin Review
Sure, Don Bluth sequels can be bad, but they are nothing compared to one of his own "unique" creations.

Comment: At the end of the day all of Bluth's films were for kids and I'm guessing none of the reviews here are from 5-6 year olds. Kids don't mind if there are "plotholes" they want a film that's going to keep their interest and not have them bored after 2 minutes. Any of the reviews here are either from childhood memories, watching the film now (at whatever age that may be) or just simply basing your entire judgement on the cover but truth is we don't think the same now as we did then, you don't come home at night and stick the kids channel on to amuse yourself. Long story short, this film has a purpose to amuse and interest the audience it is aimed at and I believe it does exactly that.

Comment: I didn't think it was that bad. I think "A Troll in Central Park" was the worst of them all. Because: 1.) Stanley was ugly and closet pedo, 2.)Pointless scenes, 3.)The Gus kid was a brat, 4.)Rosie the baby made some weird looking faces, 5.) Weak story, 6.) Gnorga was rip-off of Ursulla from "The Little Mermaid", and 7.) It's a "kid-friendly" rip-off of "Troll" and "Heart."

Comment: *sobs* OHHH, WOE IS ME!!! I hope you're sastisfied, RR. You have totally ruined my childhood by bashing "The Pebble and the Penguin". Look, I loved this movie ever since it first came out on home video. I still do (a little) despite having some very far-fetched plotholes and twists and animation goofs. The backgrounds are beautiful, as well as the songs by Barry Manilow, two of them are my favorites, "Don't Make Me Laugh" and the end credits version of "Now and Forever". This review is even more painful than the Siskel and Ebert bashing of this movie.

Also, seeing this review SUMMARIZES the movie and, pretty much, tells us what the premise is, I CAN say it looks bad (and is bad) by judging this review. So, next time, think before you call someone out.

I said it LOOKED bad, buddy. That doesn't necessarily mean that it is bad. However, judging by other people's comments, it appears to be bad.

Comment: This is more lower then your last review. Again, get your facts right. This movie was bad, but not terrible like A Troll In Central Park. Not "Bull****, Bluth" more like "Bull****, Rad." Illogical as it can get, at least they didn't do out in the open bland aside like Troll in Central Park and Thumbellina from it's cliches.

Comment: @Radical Reviewer- I wasn't getting after you for that. I saw where you were coming from and I, too, felt they could have built more upon that, maybe even tell the audience it's called the Full Moon Festival. I was talking about live long and rock's comment in regards to the plot as he seemed to be implying that the plot sucked because it focused on the whole "He needs a pebble to make-out with his gf" thing.

"You really can't fault the film for going in that direction as it is, again, based off of an actual penguin habit."
And I didn't. That's why I said "To my disappointment, instead of giving us more information about this particular tradition...". What I (And that's only me) blame this movie is that it overcomplicates the plot and necessitates itself to exploit such stupid plot twists like meteors and flying penguins.

Comment: @The FanFic Critic- I'm reminded of something that fellow in the coat said in his Willy Wonka commentary: "When I read the comments for reviews, there are two types I hate seeing. The first one is 'I never saw this movie and I'm glad I never did. What an awful film'. Or maybe you could watch it yourself and then formulate an opinion based off of that.
That Fellow: The major difference with FanFic's comment, though, is that she wrote that she think it looks awful, not that the film itself is awful. That's not much different from watching a trailer of a film and not being interested in watching it. But when you say something like "it IS awful" without seeing it, that I have a problem with. *Insert second point that doesn't apply to your statement here* You can't really judge a whole movie off of a few clips and comments made by one person." Just wanted to point that out, and I'm sure that wasn't the exact wording, but it was close.
@live long and rock- You can't really fault the plot in that sense. That was actually based off of a real tradition for penguins called the full moon festival. It's where each male penguin finds a nice pebble and uses it to propose to the female he likes best, so yeah, you really can't fault the film for going in that direction as it is, again, based off of an actual penguin habit.

Comment: Funny review, but I really don't hate this movie. I still kinda like it. If you want my opinion, Thumbelina was his worst, but aside from that Don Bluth is pretty much an animation demigod.

Comment: It was mediocre, but not as bad as Thumbelina, which wasn't as bad as Rock-a-Doodle, which wasn't as bad as A Troll in Central Park. I too disagree with your Troll statement, but the community of Rotten Tomatoes would agree with you - none of Don Bluth's movies got a lower community score than 35%!
It's pretty much what Happy Feet got its idea from, but that film was better. And then again, TPatP used the "Penguins On A Sunny Island" trope that was already used in The Cold-Blooded Penguin and Chilly Willy. It's also a shame that absolutely no-one in this movie is cute. Don Bluth (pronounced Blooth to state the obvious) forgot how to do cute at this time.

Comment: I personally think Troll was soooo much worse than this. I mean, call me a sucker for cheesy cliches, but I liked pebble and the penguin. I mean I'm not trying to flame or anything, but I still like this movie!(even if it does completely defy nature.^-^;)

Comment: In my opinion, I think "Pebble and the Penguin" is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's one half a bland and very cliched film, and the other is a jolly and enjoyable animated feature. One thing I think we can all agree is the outsourced ink and paint work as Bluth and Goldman walked out of production after completing pencil animation to accept a new job at Fox Animation.

Comment: Here's the thing about the decline in quality in his 90's films before Anastasia was made: See, All Dogs go to Heaven did so poorly upon its theatrical release that he almost went bankrupt. As a result, he had to rely on another company who wanted his works to be more like that of Disney and didn't know how to do it correctly.
As for this, I personally consider this the best of the "big 4" as I like to call them. I don't hate any of them myself, but I don't consider them masterpieces either. This one just played out better, imo. It had less plotholes, the story was a little bit better, and hey, at least one of the long-lasting characters was tolerable. Also, I have to completely disagree with that "Worse than Troll" comment. Troll is, imo, Bluth's weakest as it had barely any story to it.
Bluth is a great animator, but man, he really needs to pick his sponsors better. Well, his current sponsors seem to have the right idea.

Comment: Because then I couldn't say "Bullsh*t Bluth! Bullsh*t!" Seriously though, for one or another reason after doing research never once did I come across the fact that he left the project. Where did you get that info?
P.S. ZEE - I am happy for you and you sister, but, sadly I don't share your love and warm feeling for this movie. But that's just me...

Comment: Worse than A Troll in Central Park? Are you kidding me? A Troll in Central Park was ugly, nonsensical, and too cutesy like Barney or Teletubbies compared to The Pebble and the Penguin.

Comment: Little detail you missed. Near the end of production on Penguin, Don actually left due to a squabble with the studio. This is why they never place a director's credit on this one.

Comment: Ok, I'm really tired of this "I hate Don Bluth's 90's Films." I know it's your opiton. But seriously, not all of his films will be great as "The Secret of NIMH". My sister and I really love "The Pebble and the Penguin". Also, bevlive or not "Rock-a-Doodle" inspired my sister to a cartoonist. Thank you Don Bluth for making this great films.

Comment: I agree, it's kinda a shocker that Dom DeLuise wasn't in this movie seeing as he was in a lot of Don Bluth's movies. And is it just me, or is Drake basically the penguin version of Professor Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective (broad shoulders & chest, wears a cape, voiced by an awesome badass actor, surrounds himself with small, wimpy minions, sings a pretty cool song, dies by falling.)

Comment: After All Dogs to Heaven basically all of Don's movies in the 90's were garbage. I don't know why because he has made movies that can rival Disney. The only good thing I can say about his movies in the 90's were the animation. But even then I hate the main penguins desgins, it looks scary when they move their mouths and they don't really look like real penguins. Though ,there is good news, I did hear that he is making a Dragon's Lair movie which might be okay.
