Episode 47:
Vaulting:
Lord of the Flies (1990)
Prequels and reboots are one thing, but a remake of a well-done and thought-provoking adaption that gets tainted to just too much for our reviewer Morgan to take on a movie he greatly hates.

Comment: While the original is nowhere near perfect, the remake makes that look like Citizen Kane. The original does suffer from a few technical problems but in the end, the original is far better.

Comment: I've seen both versions (mind you I saw the 1990 version years ago) and i'm not really a fan of either. Both of the films I have similar issues with and most of the scenes you showed here in comparison I didn't particuarly like either of them or I don't particuarly like one over another. The acting is not particuarly great in either film, and I especially don't like how 'evil' they make out the savage tribe out to be. I didn't like how the new one made them military kids and I didn't like how the choir became a tribe in the old one. In both films, especially the new one, I have a problem with how stupid the kids can be. It gets just frustrating. It does make the ending kind of strange though. Like after all this madness, reality comes flying back. Overall, I think it's a good premise but both films could have done it better.

Comment: To Eoghan: Ah yes. I'm aware of those three. I Am Legend was ok. Could have been somewhat better. I've seen Film Brain's review of the Time Machine and have seen the movie. Not the best of Simon Wells and is between guilty pleasure and meh. As for Taking of Pelham, I can't give an honest opinion seeing how I never read the book, but I did think the acting was fair. However, they are butch in my opinion compared to Henry Hook's sad attempt at social satire with this movie.

Comment: Great review, this movie has to be the most butchered remake of a classic based on a famous book since I Am Legend (Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price is more closer to the book), The Time Machine '01 remake (you should check out Film Brain's review of it on thatguywiththeglasses.dom), and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three '09 remake

Comment: Good job! This review was intelligently handled, not flaunting the original but instead using it to make points why this one failed and the scripting made things seem tighter and more professional.
However....
I saw this movie as a kid and it scared the crap out of me. Keep in mind, as a kid, I knew little of bad acting or anything, but I liked it back then. I never did see the original. While this movie doesn't look as bad now as you make it out to be, I can see why fans of the original would be bugged. Plus, the acting from the clips looks rather awkward. They seem to be saying their lines based on memory and don't look like they're acting off of eachother half of the time.
I now want to watch this again, and I especially need to watch the original.

Comment: I hated how piggy's death was executed! It should crush his body (which was in the book) not his skull and the scene where it hits his head looked fake and the blood was poor excuse to make him look dead. I do give credit to this movie for some fight scenes and drama. But lacked what made the book excellent(which i read in my sophomore English class less than in a year ago). My English teacher would dislike the movie for losing the political themes and spirituality (for Simon's role in the book)This is one remake that should been remade. At least Peter Jackson or Steven Speilberg i think would make a better remake. I like the 1963 movie but the audio quality is not great and the opening credits were very cheap compared to the remake.

Comment: I think it's good that you've started scripting, it makes your show alot tighter. Also I've seen the 1960's adaptation and I don't think it was very good. there were plenty of cringeworthy moments. But the 1990's version was horrible.

Comment: To (blank): That was musical score by James Newton Howard from Dinosaur. Underrated movie with great visuals. Not big on story, but I was entertained by it.

Comment: When we were study this book in High School, we saw the original movie and "Da Bus" episode of the "Simpsons". My teacher mentioned this movie, but didn't want to show it because it broke too many rules including having an adult on the island. I can see why she didn't want to show it.
By the way, I'm afraid to asl, but did you finally see that "Planet of the Apes" prequel? I heard it was pretty good, although it pretty much gives away alot of the orginal films ending and can see why you are/were upset.

Comment: Best episode in a while. You compared the two films side by side in a well executed manner and you explained your position well enough. Also, you kept the time limited to a good length. Jokes made me laugh out loud as well.

Comment: I just heard what happen to you and Hewy. That sucks about your partnership. I guess it's for the best. It reminds me a lot like Joel Hodgson and Jim Mallon. Both of them have different views on MST3K. Just like you guys are with FMM.

Comment: I read this book last year in high school, and in my opinion, I've read better. Man, this movie looks like crap. Even the Simpsons was closer to the original story than this!!

Comment: I also think the original is much better. I especially like the lack of music in many of the scenes. It just makes it even creepier and more unsettling which also goes to the scenes where there ARE music.
